The short verdict
The UAE has only two carriers: Etisalat (rebranded as e&) and du (Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company). Both networks are excellent — coverage is 100% in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and strong throughout the country. The key things to know: (1) UAE eSIM prices are higher than most destinations because the duopoly limits competition. (2) VoIP calls (WhatsApp voice, FaceTime Audio, Skype) may not work over UAE mobile data — this is a regulatory restriction, not a technical one. (3) Regular WhatsApp messaging works fine.
UAE eSIM comparison table (2026)
| Provider | Plan | Price | Network | Refund |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flysimio | 5 GB / 30 days | $9.50 | du | 14-day full |
| Airalo (du UAE) | 5 GB / 30 days | $16.00 | du | Unused only |
| Holafly | Unlimited / 7 days | $19.00 | Etisalat | 24-hr unused |
| Nomad | 5 GB / 30 days | $14.00 | du | Unused credit |
| Saily | 5 GB / 30 days | $13.99 | du | Case by case |
The VoIP restriction explained
The UAE government restricts VoIP services over mobile data for consumer plans. This means WhatsApp Audio calls, FaceTime Audio, Skype calls, and similar services may fail or have very poor quality over an eSIM data connection in the UAE. Regular text messages, web browsing, video streaming, and all non-voice functions work normally. The restriction applies to both Etisalat and du networks. If VoIP is critical for your trip, consider purchasing a local SIM with a specific VoIP-enabled plan, or make calls over hotel or venue Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi calling is not affected by the restriction).

Frequently asked questions
What is the best eSIM for the UAE?
Flysimio is the cheapest UAE eSIM in 2026. Both UAE carriers (Etisalat/e& and du) have equivalent world-class coverage, so price is the main differentiator. Flysimio offers plans on du at the lowest rates.
Does WhatsApp work in the UAE on an eSIM?
WhatsApp text messages work normally in the UAE. WhatsApp voice calls may not work over UAE mobile data due to VoIP restrictions. Make voice calls over hotel Wi-Fi or venue Wi-Fi networks, which are not affected by the restriction.
Does eSIM work in Dubai?
Yes. Dubai has excellent 5G coverage on both Etisalat and du networks throughout the city, including the Marina, Downtown, Palm Jumeirah, Deira, and Dubai International Airport.
Does eSIM work in Abu Dhabi?
Yes. Abu Dhabi is fully covered by both UAE carriers. The city centre, Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque area all have strong 5G coverage.
How much does UAE eSIM cost?
UAE eSIM plans cost more than most destinations due to the duopoly market. Flysimio offers 5 GB / 30 days for around $9.50 — the cheapest we found. Airalo charges $16 for the same plan. Budget at least $8–10 for a week of moderate data use.
